I've owned cars from Minis and Rovers, to Porsche,Jaguar and Mercedes, and that has been the golden rule. I've never had _anything_ go wrong with an engine in over four decades of motoring. No contest! How do I know when its time to change my engine oil?Always check oil and transmission fluid at the same time. Usually, the bench mark is 5000 miles. However, if the vehicle is a truck and you do a lot of hauling, you may need to check more often. If you have an SUV, then you should be checking your oil quite often, as well as your transmission fluid.

How old is your car? How much do you drive off-highway and/or %26quot;start-and-stop%26quot; in town? What weight oil do you use? What brand of oil do you use? Is your car 10 years or older?

Your car's owner's manual should outline the best maintenance procedures, but you can also ask folks you trust who may be older and more familiar with taking care of automobiles and trucks. How do I know when its time to change my engine oil? This question has been showing up a lot lately. You'll find everything from 3,000 miles to 10,000+.

I say 3,000 miles, and I'll tell you exactly why. In newer cars, manufacturers have a recommended oil change interval...it's usually 3,000, but can be 5,000 miles as well. It'll say so in your owner's manual. Go by what they say, especially if it's under warranty. Any damage that occurs by you not changing your oil within the recommended interval will result in a voided warranty.

Simply put though...an oil change takes 15 minutes, costs $20-30, and depending on how much you drive, will last you up to 3 months. There is no sense in trying to push it further, as it basically translates to laziness. You will never hurt your car by changing your oil at 3,000 miles--give or take a hundred or so--and a $30 oil change will always make more sense to me than a $5000 engine rebuild.

Clean engine oil is essential to your car.
